Description
"Our sashes and bands started as a Centennial project in 1967. A French-Metis friend, Mildred Milton, encouraged us to research the old finger woven "Assumption Sash" Worn by the Courier du Bois in early French Canada. In the process, we started weaving some early French Canadian, loom woven adaptations of this sash. Since finger weaving is very time consuming, the loom-woven sashes absorbed more of our interest and soon took over entirely. While trying sashes form other countries, we began our own variations. It was the warp faced twill weave we found ourselves using the most, it being so versatile. Each new pattern gave birth to others, and designs just grew and grew. Even some mistakes became designs. Eventually, there were so many patterns, we could have written a book about them!
And so we did. Here are some patterns and lessons from along the way. Our early trials were horrendous struggles. It is so easy to make mistakes when you are learning. Mildred used to wear an incredible knobby knitted yellow hat when weaving " to keep her hair from standing on end".
Now we know what we are doing and it is fun. So welcome to warp-faced twill sashes, headbands, dog leashes, guitar straps, suitcase pulls, parka trim, scarves, belts and what have you."
This book was printed in a limited edition of 1000 copies.
Illustrator Lynn Johnston is the cartoonist and writer for comic strip "For Better or for Worse."
Sashes, Straps and Bands has minor corner, edge and rub wear on the covers. The top of the spine is a bit crooked, resulting in the tips of the pages being bent. Please see photos.
